BADASS TEACHERS ASSOCIATION TO HOLD 4TH ANNUAL EDUCATION CONFERENCE

The Badass Teachers Association is excited to announce that their 4th annual conference this year will be centered on the Whole Child and cultural diversity in our classrooms. The conference key note speakers will include Dr. Denisha Jones, from Trinity Washington University and Dr. Wayne Au, an associate professor at University of Washington Bothell. Other featured organizations include McERA, Purple DACA Letters, My Purple Umbrella, and Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx de Aztlán.

The first day of the event, July 22, will include a series of workshops at the Seattle Labor Temple including Student Equity Team Projects, how to support gender diverse youth and their families, and the impact of public education on communities of color.  BAT executive directors will be discussing the #WeChoose coalition and moving forward to support the work of local community advocacy groups as well as Runaway Inequality and how these issues all impact our students. Events on July 23rd will take place at Westlake Park, revolving around BATs restoring justice to our communities with a Native blessing, performances, and a restorative justice circle.

Dr Jones will be highlighting her new project, Student Equity Teams, in Seattle. “We need to assist the students in advocating for themselves and arming themselves with their own data.  By teaching them how to collect and analyze equity data in a variety of areas including facilities, resources, curriculum, and school climate, we will provide them with their own data to highlight the gaps and demand what they need.” BATs Board of Directors member, Washington BAT Becca Ritchie is excited that this year’s event will be in Seattle. “The wealth of diversity the Pacific Northwest  is the perfect setting for our BATs Conference this year.  The rich culture that our schools enjoy must be shared with others from across the country.”
