My child, and many of his peers, are shining examples of what can be achieved when teachers, parents and students all work to make the educational experience as positive as can be for each child. This year, I see SPED students in NY ready to drop out to get away from the testing culture. NYS being unique in that it requires students to pass 5 high stakes exams in order to earn a diploma. (math, science, ELA, US History and Global History). If you struggle with a reading or processing disability, and must test with no accommodations other then extended time, then a subset of students will never make it through this many tests.<br /><br />Even if they have passed the 5 required regents and are studying at BOCES, everything is about testing. The students question 'Where is the learning? Where is the experience?" because they know life is not unrelenting test taking.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
